January 28, 2023 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Four Ball State women's basketball players scored in double figures to lift the Cardinals past Ohio 69-52 Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.
The win also marked the Cardinals' 11th-year head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee's 200th victory at Ball State. Sallee is now the winningest coach for both the men's and women's basketball programs at Ball State.
With the win, Ball State improves to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in Mid-American Conference action, while Ohio drops to 3-16 and 0-7 in league play.
Redshirt senior Anna Clephane led the Cardinals with 20 points, while graduate senior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir had 18 in the Cardinals win. Sophomore's Ally Becki and Marie Kiefer finished the game with 11 points apiece, while Becki pulled down nine rebounds along with dishing out six assists.
At the 4:45 mark Agustsdottir's second-chance 3-pointer gave Ball State the lead, while also sparking a 10-0 run, which was capped off by a jumper from senior Sydney Shafer to make it 24-14 with 1:40 left in the first quarter of play.
After that, Ball State remained in control and never looked back taking a 44-34 lead over Ohio at intermission.
The Cardinals eventually built an 18-point (65-47) cushion at the 2:10 mark in the third quarter of play. Ball State used that same momentum the final 10 minutes of the game to secure yet another MAC win today.
The Cardinals shot over 50 percent in both the second and third quarters. The Cardinals defense also played a huge roll especially in the final frame as Ball State limited Ohio to 14.3 percent shooting from the floor.
The Ball State women's basketball team will be back in action at home next week when it hosts Northern Illinois Wednesday, Feb. 1 for a 6:30 pm ET midweek MACtion showdown in Worthen Arena.
