July 18, 2022 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Head Coach Rich Maloney and the Ball State baseball team announced the addition of Alex Maloney and Tanner Holen to the 2023 coaching staff on Tuesday.
"We are thrilled to have one of our own, Alex Maloney, join our staff as our recruiting coordinator and Tanner Holen as our volunteer coach," said Coach Maloney. "We are excited to add both Alex and Tanner to our staff."
Alex Maloney returns to Ball State as an assistant coach. He will assist with day-to-day operations as well as serve as the recruiting coordinator. Alex Maloney spent last season as an assistant coach at SIUE. While with the Cougars, he worked with hitters and infielders as well as recruiting players. During his time at SIUE, the hitters combined to hit 99 home runs, which was tied for 21st in the NCAA and led the Ohio Valley Conference. The Cougars produced a slugging percentage of .524, which was 12th the country and led the OVC. The 99 home runs set a new program record. The Cougars picked up the program's first two wins in a conference tournament at the NCAA Division I level. He guided Brett Johnson to a program record 23 home runs and a First Team All-OVC selection.
Prior to SIUE, Alex Maloney was a volunteer assistant at Tennessee Tech. While with the Golden Eagles, he worked with hitters, catchers, infielders, and was primarily in charge of defensive alignment.
Alex Maloney spent time as a graduate assistant at Wayne State where he worked with the pitchers. He helped them to an 11-4 start prior to COVID-19 shutting down the season. The Wayne State pitching staff recorded the lowest ERA in the conference during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He worked with Hunter Brown, who played in the 2022 MLB All-Star Futures Game and is the No. 1 overall prospect in the Houston Astros organization.
In the summer of 2019, Alex Maloney served as an assistant coach in the United Shores professional Baseball League, where he worked with infielders and hitters. He also assisted in evaluating and recruiting athletes.
During his time at Ball State as a student-athlete, Alex Maloney was a member of the 2014 MAC regular-season championship team as well as the MAC West Division winners in 2014 and 2016. He is currently tied for second in BSU history with 120 career walks and is third with 865 at-bats. He produced 235 hits for his career. After Ball State, he spent a season in the Chicago White Sox minor league system in 2017.
Head Coach Rich Maloney on Alex Maloney
"Alex played on our 2014 MAC Regular Season Championship team that helped us get Ball State baseball back on the map of college baseball. He played one season in the White Sox organization before embarking on a coaching career with stops at Wayne State, Tennessee Tech, and SIUE. Alex is passionate and determined to add value to our young men. Alex will work with our outfielders and assist with our infielders and hitters."
Holen joins the Cardinals after spending a season at Western Illinois as an assistant coach. Prior to joining the Leatherneck staff, he served as the site director for Perfect Game Midwest where he facilitated high school baseball tournaments throughout the region. He also aided in the coordination of scouting and player evaluation.
Holen finished his playing career at Cincinnati. He hit .300 during the 2021 season with three home runs and a slugging percentage of .529. He also was a student-athlete at Kentucky.
Holen will be a volunteer coach. He will work primarily with the catchers and assist with the hitters. During games, he will manage the bullpen.
Head Coach Rich Maloney on Tanner Holen
"Tanner played at Iowa Western, Kentucky, and played for Cincinnati as a graduate transfer. Tanner will be primarily responsible for developing our catchers. Having been a catcher himself, he has a strong desire to help our catchers raise the bar defensively at such an important position. Tanner is self-confident, passionate, and determined to add value to our team."
