WBB Ends Successful Postseason Run With WNIT Loss At Marquette
March 16, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Ball State women's basketball team suffered a 93-70 season ending loss at Marquette in the first round of the postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center.
With the loss, the Cardinals finished their season with a 20-13 overall record while the Golden Eagles improved to 22-10 for the year and will advance to the second round against Purdue.
This marked the seventh WNIT appearance and 10th overall for the Cardinals. Ball State ended the year with a successful run in the Mid-American Conference Tournament last week in Cleveland by knocking off No. 4 seed Northern Illinois and No. 1 seed Toledo to reach the title game where Ball State fell to No. 2 seed Buffalo, 79-75.
Ally Becki became the first freshman in program history to earn MAC All-Tournament Team honors.
Tonight's contest was led by Becki with 22 points while junior Sydney Freeman registered 15 points, and freshman Madelyn Bischoff rounded out the double digit scoring with 11.
It was truly a battle to start the contest as both teams swapped baskets.
Ball State remained in reach for the majority of the first half after some key baskets from Becki and Freeman.
It wasn't until late in the second quarter that Marquette began to pull away from Ball State. At the 7:14 mark, Marquette had built a seven-point (27-20) edge over Ball State that eventually resulted in a 44-35 cushion for the Golden Flashes at intermission.
After that, Ball State never recovered in the second 20 minutes of action and would end its season despite putting up a good fight the remainder of the contest.
A key statistic to Marquette's win today was rebounds with the Golden Eagles winning that battle, 51-30. Also, points in the paint caused BSU fits as Marquette scored 51 to Ball State's 26.
Ball State will have a wealth of experience returning for its 2022-23 season as all five starters return to the lineup next year.
