Cardinals Split Day One of Mid-American Challenge

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Ball State women's golf team began the spring portion of the schedule on Monday at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club for the Mid-American Challenge. Ball State fell to Eastern Michigan but defeated Ohio on day one.
The Mid-American Challenge is a match play tournament. The Cardinals opened with a match against Eastern Michigan, before Ball State faced Ohio.
Ball State 2.5, EMU 2.5, EMU Wins on Tiebreaker
Liz Kim defeated EMU's Anna Watson 3&1. Kim went 1up after the first hole to start the match. Watson was able to gain a 1up advantage after the sixth hole, but Kim battled back to tie the matchup at the turn. Watson went 1up after the 11th hole, but Kim was able to tie the match on the next hole. Kim went on to win three of the next five holes to win 3&1.
Kiah Parrott went up against Sophia Wygonik. Wygonik was 3up as the match went to the turn, but Parrott stormed back to tie the match after the 13th. After Wygonik went 1up after the 15th, Parrott responded by winning the next hole. The match was tied going into the 18th hole, which Parrott won to give her the match win, 1up.
Hadley Moritz battled Natai Apichonlati to a tie. Moritz went 1up on the opening hole, but Apichonlati tied the match on the third hole. Apichonlati won the fifth hole, but Moritiz answered with a win on the sixth. The match stayed even at the turn. Moritz went 1down on the 10th but was able to tie the match on the 12th. Moritz had a 1up advantage going into the 18th, but Apichonlati won the 18th and tied the match.
Kyleigh Dull won her match against Morgan Lewis, 3&2. Alyssa DiMarcantonio bested Dylann Armstrong 7&5. The Eagles won more holes than the Cardinals which gave them the advantage to win the tiebreaker.
Ball State 4, Ohio 1
Moritz came out firing on all cylinders in the matchup against Alicia Porvasnik and was 6up after seven holes. Moritz was 6up at the turn and went on to win the matchup 6&5.
Parrott faced off with Avery Ovens. Parrott won the first hole, but Ovens tied the match after the second hole. Parrott was 2up after seven holes and took a 1up lead into the back nine. Ovens managed to tie the match after the 10th hole, but Parrott claimed the next two holes to go back on top 2up. Parrott did not give up the lead the remainder of the matchup and won 3&2, for her second victory of the day.
Kim finished the day 2-0, after she defeated Thanya Arasu in the afternoon. Arasu won the first hole, but Kim answered with a win on the second hole to send the match to even. Arasu managed to go 2up after the sixth hole, but Kim was unfazed and won the next three holes and took a 1up lead into the back nine. Kim never looked back and won the match 2up.
Sydney Longstreth won the first hole against Armstrong, but Armstrong responded with a win on the second, to level the match. Armstrong held a 1up lead at the turn. Longstreth won three holes and claimed a 2up lead after the 13th. Armstrong kept her composure and tied the match going into the 18th hole. Armstrong won the hole and won the match 1up.
Catherine Loftus knocked off Lewis 3&2 for Ohio's lone win in the matchup.
Ball State returns to action for the final day of the Mid-American Challenge with a matchup against Toledo. The Cardinals and Rockets will go off on the first hole, with the first pairing teeing off at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Live results will be provided and can be found here.
