Women’s Volleyball Excited To Welcome Four In 2023
November 09, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - To compete at a championship level, you must recruit championship-level athletes. That is just what Ball State women's volleyball head coach Kelli Miller Phillips and her staff have done with the program's latest recruiting class.
Set to join the Cardinals for the 2023 season are:
… A two-time state champion in Kendall Barnes (Bartlett, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian).
… A pair of 2022 IHSAA Class 2A State Champions in Reese Baker (Selma, Ind./Wapahani) and Camryn Wise (Parker City, Ind./Wapahani)
… A two-time Girls Greater Catholic League Champion Lindsey Green (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), who also has her squad playing in the state semifinals this coming weekend.
Reese Baker | 5-4 | Defensive Specialist | Selma, Ind./Wapahani
Phillips on Baker: Reese is such a fun player to watch. She flies all over the backcourt and throws her body all over to ensure the ball doesn't hit the ground on our side of the net. Her quickness, ability to read attackers, and relentlessness as a defender are going to be huge assets for us. I also love her attention to detail as a passer. She's so willing to learn and be coached and I can't wait to have her in the gym.
Career Highlights: A four-year letterwinner for coach Kati Weir, a four-year Ball State women's volleyball letterwinner herself, at Wapahani High School … captained the Raiders to a 32-5 record and the 2022 IHSAA Class 2A State Championship as a senior … led Wapahani to a 117-22 record over her career, including IHSAA State Championship runner-up finishes as a freshman and sophomore … earned all-state second team as a sophomore … a three-time all-conference and all-county selection … finished her career with 1,557 total digs, including a match-high 24 in the championship match of the 2022 IHSAA State Finals versus Linton-Stockton … also a four-year letterwinner in basketball and a one-year letterwinner in track at Wapahani … played nine years of club volleyball at Munciana … helped guide her 2017 team to a top 5 national ranking … 2019 national championship runner-up.
Why Ball State: I chose Ball State because of the family feel that I got from the coaches, players, and fans.
Kendall Barnes | 6-1 | Outside/Opposite | Bartlett, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian
Phillips on Barnes: We are excited to welcome Kendall to the Cardinal Family. She is a physical pin attacker that plays high and hits hard. I love her range of shots and her confidence at the net. She also has a powerful serve that can score a ton of points at the end line. She continues to improve her all around passing and defending game each time I see her. She's a competitor and knows how to win and I'm excited to add her to our program.
Career Highlights: A three-year letterwinner in volleyball for coach Carrie Yerty at Briarcrest Christian … helped guide the Saints to Tennessee Division II AA State Championships as a sophomore and senior … the 2022 State Tournament MVP, she also earned first team all-state as a junior and senior … captained Briarcrest to a 37-6 record her senior season, smashing 396 kills and hitting .333 … finished her career with 755 kills, a .314 attack percentage, 292 digs, 131 aces and 99 total blocks … team finished the 2021 season at state runner-up with a 40-3 overall record … also finished her career as a two-time all-region and two-time all-metro selection … played club volleyball for the Memphis Metro 18 Masters.
Why Ball State: The team and campus had a family-like feel that was super welcoming. It was also fun to watch all of the players and coaches have a great time doing something they all loved.
Lindsey Green | 5-10 | Setter | Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy
Phillips on Green: Lindsey is a stud setter. She gets to the ball quick and puts her hitters in great spots time and time again. Her tempo and consistency on her sets makes it easy for hitters to get in rhythm and she competes as hard as anyone. She has a great volleyball IQ and I love the creativity she has in running an offense. She's going to be a great addition to the Cardinal family.
Career Highlights: A four-year letterwinner in volleyball for coach Ali Butcher at Ursuline Academy … has helped the Lions advance to the 2022 OHSAA Division I State Semifinals, with the team battling Bishop Watterson on Friday at 4 p.m. at Wright State … led Ursuline Academy to a 24-3 record so far this season, handing out 874 assists, collecting 223 digs, and earning 43 total blocks … a team captain as a junior and senior, she has earned first team all-state as a junior and senior … also led the program to a pair of Girls Greater Catholic League Championships, three regional runner-up finishes, and a 102-19 record over her career … AVCA All-Region and Larosas MVP as a senior … two-time first team all-conference and all-district, after earning honorable mention in both as a sophomore … enters the 2022 state semifinals with 2,708 assists, 689 digs, 198 total blocks and 191 kills over her career … played club volleyball from Elevation Volleyball Club from 10U to 18U … prepvolleyball.com top setters in class of 2023 and AVCA Preseason All-American as a junior … JVA Watch List as a junior and senior … selected for Under Armor All-American Camp as a sophomore and junior … helped guide her 13U team to a fifth-place finish at nationals and her 14U squad to an 11th-place effort.
Why Ball State: I chose Ball State because the second I walked in, I felt like I was a part of the family. The culture at Ball State is amazing and what I have always wanted. I also love the whole coaching staff.
Camryn Wise | 5-11 | Middle Blocker | Parker City, Ind./Wapahani
Phillips on Wise: Cam is a competitor. She's not the tallest in stature but she makes up for it in her fire and heart. She has an extremely fast arm and gets on the ball as quick as anyone. She works hard in transition and simply finds ways to help her team score points. She's continued to develop her back court game recently which will help her be even more versatile for us, but she will add much needed depth to our middle position as well as a fire to a gym!
Career Highlights: A four-year letterwinner for coach Kati Weir, a four-year Ball State women's volleyball letterwinner herself, at Wapahani High School … captained the Raiders to a 32-5 record and the 2022 IHSAA Class 2A State Championship as a senior … led Wapahani to a 117-22 record over her career, including IHSAA State Championship runner-up finishes as a freshman and sophomore … first team all-state selection as a sophomore and junior, after earning second team honors as a freshman … finished her career with 1,351 career kills, including a match-high 22 in the championship match of the 2022 IHSAA State Finals versus Linton-Stockton … hit .322 over her career, while adding 275 total blocks, 222 service aces and 411 digs over 426 career sets played … earned first team all-conference and first-team all-county all four years … picked for the North vs. South All-Star Match as a junior, going on to earn MVP honors at the event … four-time academic all-state honoree … also earned four letters in basketball for Wapahani, earning all-county and all-conference honors all four seasons … also an all-state honorable mention and a member of the 1000 point and 500 rebound clubs … played club volleyball at Munciana from 13U to 18U.
