Volpe Named MAC Specialist of the Week
January 18, 2022 | Gymnastics
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - After turning in a pair of brilliant beam performances last week, Ball State senior gymnast Lauren Volpe has been named the Mid-American Conference Specialist of the Week.
Â
"Lauren has worked really hard on beam this fall, keeping a very smart approach to her training," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "We are seeing that pay off in competitions. She's turned in three spectacular routines, including her effort Sunday at Western Michigan which ties as the best beam score in the MAC this season. She has the ability to stay calm and collected throughout her routines and has performed well. We are very excited for her."
Â
Volpe opened the week with a team-best 9.775 on beam in an impromptu visit to Kentucky. Her effort placed third among the 12 competitors who performed in front of a packed crowd of 9,226 fans at UK's Rupp Arena.
Â
She followed with an even more impressive beam performance Sunday, registering a career-best score of 9.875 at Western Michigan. Not only was the score good enough to give her the event title at WMU, but it also ties as the best score in the league on beam so far this season.
Â
Volpe and the Cardinals return to action Sunday, when they welcome Kent State to Worthen Arena for the first of four home meets this season. Action begins at 1 p.m. ET with the meet being broadcast live on ESPN3.
Â
Ball State enters the meet ranked 27th nationally with an average score of 194.733, while the Golden Flashes are 24th with a score of 195.300 in its lone meet so far this season.
