Gymnastics To Compete at No. 13 Kentucky Friday for Excite Night
January 13, 2022 | Gymnastics
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State gymnastics will get an unexpected chance to compete against one of the nation's top programs Friday, when it travels to preseason No. 13 Kentucky for Excite Night inside Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center.Â
Â
The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and is slated to be broadcast on the SEC Network.
Â
The Cardinals, who opened the season last Friday at No. 16 Missouri, will replace No. 21 Georgia who was originally scheduled to battle the Wildcats. That matchup has been postponed due to health and safety protocols within the Georgia gymnastics program, consistent with Southeastern Conference COVID-19 management requirements.Â
Ball State turned in its best season-opening performance since 2018 last Friday with a score of 193.775 to hang close to the nationally ranked Tigers (196.600) and top Illinois State (191.600) which received votes in the Preseason WCGA National Poll. Based on the strength of last weekend's performance, the Cardinals enter Friday's meet ranked 28th nationally.
Â
That 2018 score, ironically, was a 194.475 set at Kentucky on Jan. 5, 2018 in a quad meet which saw the Cardinals fall to the Wildcats, while topping both Southeast Missouri and George Washington.
Â
BSU's student-athletes turned in several solid performances last Friday, with senior Lauren Volpe's beam performance of 9.850 leading the way. It was the best beam score in the Mid-American Conference opening weekend and currently ranks 38th nationally.
Â
Ball State's other tops scores during the opening meet were a 9.800 from senior Stefanie Schweikert on vault, a 9.800 from junior Megan Teter on bars, and a 9.775 from sophomore Hannah Ruthberg on floor.
Â
The Ball State gymnastics team will have a quick turnaround from Friday night's meet, as it is still scheduled to travel to Western Michigan Sunday for a 1 p.m. competition.
