Cardinals Battle Eagles to Scoreless Draw
September 23, 2021 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team returned to the friendly confines of the Briner Sports Complex for the Mid-American Conference opener Thursday. The Cardinals battled the Eastern Michigan Eagles to a 0-0 draw. Maya Millis produced the play of the game with a team save to secure the draw in double overtime.
At the nine-minute mark, Millis put the first shot on target of the game but was unable to beat the EMU keeper. Kennedy Metzger ripped a shot on net, but the Eagle goalie made a big stop 35 minutes into the match. The Cardinals had another scoring chance in the 38th minute, when Lexi Fraley managed to beat the EMU keeper, but the shot went just high enough to hit the crossbar.
The BSU defense was stout in the first half as the group did not allow EMU to get a shot on target.
Eastern Michigan came out fast in the second frame and put the first shot on net, but Alex DeRuvo came up with the save to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
Nicky Potts and Kaitlyn Fraser put shots on target in the 69th and 72nd minutes, respectively, but the EMU goalkeeper was up for the challenge and kept the match at 0-0. Jenna Dombrowski posted the final two shots on target of regulation but was unable to find the back of the net.
In the first overtime period, neither team was able to record a shot due to the staunch defense.
The biggest play of the night came in the 101st minute. The Eagles managed to beat the Cardinal goalie, but Millis posted a huge team save as she headed the ball away from the goal and preserved the tie.
Ball State will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 23, as they travel to Mount Pleasant, Michigan for a matchup with Central Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
From the Coach – Head Coach Josh Rife
"We did a lot of good things. The one thing we didn't do was convert on finding the back of the net. It's good that we have a level of expectancy with this group where they can be frustrated after that performance. We did everything but find the back of the net. We need to be a little more decisive in the final third. We need to be decisive on whether we're going to shoot or play a ball across the box. In those moments, we need to commit to something and go for it."
