Volleyball Tops Purdue Fort Wayne in Exhibition Action
August 21, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Saturday afternoon was exactly what the Ball State women's volleyball team needed, as it took advantage of an exhibition match versus Purdue Fort Wayne by testing a variety of options to prep for next Friday's season-opening matches.
Â
When it was all said and done, 16 different players saw action for the Cardinals who threw out a different lineup in each set of its 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17) victory over the Mastodons.
Â
"We got exactly what we needed to get out of today," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "Just seeing where we're at and allowing people to get experience on the floor. We had a ton of new bodies and got to work on our setter/hitter relationship, developing that trust with one another. You can only get so much out of practice. You really have to play other people to expose areas we need to continue to get better at."
Â
The Cardinals used a different setter in each of the first three sets and finished the night hitting .218 as a team. By the end of the match, it was freshman setter Megan Wielonski who would lead the team with 25 assists. Wielonski also served up three of BSU's five aces in the win.
Â
Offensively, the Cardinals had three players reach double digits, let by 15 kills from junior right side Natalie Mitchem. In her Ball State debut, graduate transfer Jaclyn Bulmahn registered 12 kills in just two sets of action. Junior outside Natalie Risi rounded out the group with 11 kills, while adding 14 digs for a double-double.
Â
Ball State was also able to test its depth in the backrow, with sophomore Kate Vinson and junior Maggie Huber splitting time at libero and collecting 17 and 14 digs, respectively. Junior transfer Havyn Gates also shined in the contest, with 14 digs of her own.
Â
Next up for the Cardinals, the start of the 2021 fall season at the GBD Invite. Ball State opens the two-day event Friday with matches versus tournament host Green Bay (Noon ET / 11 a.m. CT) and St. Thomas (5 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. CT).
