Women's Volleyball Welcomes Transfer Havyn Gates

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State women's volleyball is excited to welcome transfer Havyn Gates to the program according to head coach Kelli Miller Phillips.
Gates, a Muncie native and former Wapahani High School standout, joins the Cardinals after playing the last two seasons at Indiana Wesleyan University where she was the 2020 Crossroads League Libero of the Year. She helped guide the Wildcats to a pair of Crossroads League regular season and tournament titles, as well as a 59-6 (29-2 CL) record in her two years with the program.
"We're excited to bring Havyn back to Muncie," Phillips said. "She's quick, digs a ton of balls and is a fearless competitor. She will add great depth to our backcourt, and I can't wait to get her in the gym in just a few short weeks!"
In addition to earning libero of the year honors, Gates was named to the All-Crossroads League First Team after finishing the 2020 season with 404 digs and a 4.81 digs-per-set average. She played in all 24 matches, helping lead the Wildcats to a 21-3 (12-1 CL) record and a No. 11 ranking in the final NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches Top 25 Poll.
As a freshman in 2019, Gates ranked 11th among all NAIA players with 720 digs. She was named the NAIA Tournament Most Outstanding Defensive Player after collecting a career-high 42 digs in a four-set win over Grand View (Iowa) to help send her IWU squad to the quarterfinals of the 2019 NAIA Volleyball National Championship.
Gates finished her freshman campaign with a 5.18 digs-per-set average which helped earn her a spot on both the All-Crossroads League Second Team and the Crossroads League All-Freshman Team. She was also named to the NAIA All-Tournament squad. The Wildcats finished the season with a 38-3 (17-1 CL) mark and ranked seventh in the final poll.
Over her two years at IWU, Gates logged 1,124 total digs over 223 sets played for a 5.04 digs-per-set average. She also logged a .961 career reception percentage, with just 41 errors over 1,018 attempts. Gates was also a threat herself from the service line, registering 87 career aces. She was also credited with 41 career kills and 133 career assists.
Prior to attending Indiana Wesleyan, Gates was a four-year letterwinner at Wapahani, helping guide the Raiders to IHSAA Class 2A State Championships as a freshman and a sophomore. She collected 1,827 career digs at Wapahani, while serving up 211 career aces. Gates also earned one letter in track & field for the Raiders.
