Baker, McDermott Voted ABCA All-Region
June 16, 2021 | Baseball
After forming one of the best 1-2 pitching combos in the Midwest during the 2021 season, John Baker and Chayce McDermott were honored by the coaches in the area. The two aces right-handers were voted American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Midwest Region.Â
Baker, a first team All-MAC pick, was also named first team ABCA All-Region. McDermott was a second team All-MAC and All-ABCA honoree.
With Baker going Friday and McDermott going Saturday, teams in the Midwest found hits and runs to come by. The two pitchers combined for a 17-5 record and 2.35 ERA, six complete games and four saves. They combined for 232 strikeouts over 183.2 innings while allowing hitters to hit just .218 against them.Â
Baker finished his fifth and final season at 9-3 with four saves and a 2.32 ERA, an exclamation point on one of the best pitching careers in Ball State history. McDermott went 8-2 with a 3.05 ERA and was among the national leaders with 125 strikeouts.
With the two all-region pitchers and also a strong season from senior Lukas Jaksich (8-3, 96 Ks), the 2021 Cards went 38-18 overall and 29-11 in conference play. Ball State beat CWS qualifier Arizona twice, Kentucky twice and MAC champion Central Michigan twice while facing one of the toughest schedules in the nation.Â
