June 11, 2021 | General
MUNCIE, Ind. - - An unusually busy spring did not hinder Ball State's student-athletes from excelling in the classroom, as the Cardinals finished the 2021 academic year with a record 3.37 cumulative grade point average.
Â
The mark surpassed the 3.35 cumulative GPA held by Ball State's student-athletes following the 2020 fall semester. A total of 17 varsity programs (indoor and outdoor track & field are combined for grade reporting) currently have a cumulative team GPA above 3.0, while 342 student-athletes carry a cumulative GPA at or above 3.0, including 23 with a perfect 4.0.
Â
"The determination of our student-athletes to excel in the classroom is nothing short of amazing," Ball State Director of Athletics Beth Goetz said. "Their continued academic success while navigating the challenges of the pandemic is a great source of pride not only for our department, but the entire University. It also speaks volumes about the commitment and dedication of the coaches, faculty and staff supporting our student-athletes."
Â
In addition, the Cardinals finished the 2021 spring semester with a 3.31 term GPA. Nearly 55 percent of Ball State's student-athletes (239) earned a spot on the Dean's List with a semester GPA at or above 3.5. Just as impressive, 73 Cardinals finished the spring with a 4.0 term GPA, while 337 earned at least a 3.0.
Â
For the second straight semester, soccer helped lead the charge on the women's side, boasting a 3.785 term GPA. Cross Country was not far behind, taking second with a 3.763 mark.
Â
Overall, 10 women's varsity programs tallied at least a 3.37 term GPA, with eight above a 3.5. Joining the top women's squads were volleyball (3.689), golf (3.667), field hockey (3.612), tennis (3.564), swimming & diving (3.560) and softball (3.554).
Â
Among the seven men's programs, tennis took top honors for the spring with a 3.412 term GPA. Baseball (3.394), golf (3.391), volleyball (3.333) and swimming & diving (3.210) also finished above a 3.2 for the semester.
