LEXINGTON, Ky. - - Battling some of the nation's top divers, Ball State senior Caitlin Locante turned in a pair of strong performances at the 2021 NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, including a pair of top 10 dives on the final day of competition.
Locante, a three-time Mid-American Conference Women's Diver of the Week award winner this season, started the meet Sunday by placing 28th on the 1-meter board. She finished the day with a score of 207.40 at the Lancaster Aquatic Center on the University of Kentucky campus.
However, she posted some even stronger individual dives, starting with the 18th-best dive among the 28 competitors in the fifth round with a score of 42.00 on her inward 1 ½ somersault pike.
She closed the opening day with an even more impressive dive, scoring the 13th-best sixth-round score with a 45.00 on her back 1 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist free.
On Monday, Locante picked up right where she left off, opening the 3-meter competition with her best dive of the two-day meet, scoring 50.40 on her back 1 ½ somersault 2 ½ twist free. It was the ninth-best score of the opening round.
Her second dive of the day was almost as impressive, as she turned in a score of 48.00 on her forward 2 ½ somersault pike, the 11th-best score of the second round.
Overall, Locante placed 23rd of the 27 competitors on the 3-meter board with a combined score of 229.35. She also turned in the 10-best fifth-round dive with a 46.20 on her reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck.
Locante and the Ball State swimming & diving team are scheduled to return to action Saturday, when they travel to Akron for a 3 p.m. showdown with the Zips.
