March 13, 2021 | Gymnastics
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Ball State turned in one of the best uneven bars rotations in school history and finished the day with a strong 195.650 score in a quad meet at Central Michigan on Saturday. BSU's 195.650 stands as the third-highest mark of the season.
"It was an exciting atmosphere and a great warmup for next weekend - there were so many competitive teams on the floor," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "The MAC is really strong this year, it was a wonderful opportunity to get a quad meet with these teams to close the regular season."
BSU started the day strong on floor with a 49.075 (three gymnasts 9.825 or better) and stumbled a bit in the second rotation on vault. The Cards recovered in a big way in the third rotation, scoring 49.250 on bars with all six routines scoring 9.775 or better. Victoria Henry and Megan Teter each delivered a sparkling 9.900 bars score, tying for first place. Marissa Nychyk and Arden Hudson each added 9.825 routines.
The 49.250 team mark was the second-highest in school history and best mark in 20 years, behind only the 49.275 bars mark the 2001 Ball State team scored at UIC.
Central Michigan (196.425) had the highest score of the four teams, followed by Eastern Michigan (196.100) and BSU's 195.650 mark. Western Michigan, the only team to outscore Ball State head-to-head before Saturday, was fourth of four teams (194.500).
Saturday's meet served as a good test before the conference championships next week. Ball State, the three Michigan schools and Kent State are all bunched near the top of the conference's NQS standings. Ball State, which has now defeated every MAC team head-to-head at least once this season, posted consistently strong scores across the board. BSU had 14 of 24 routines score 9.8 or better, second-best in the meet.
Nychyk scored 39.050 all-around and was excellent in three events: 9.900 on beam (tied for first), 9.825 on bars and floor. Alivia Ostendorf led the Cards on floor (9.85) and Henry and Bri Slonim led on vault (9.825). In addition to a 9.900 on bars, Teter added a 9.825 floor score.
"We continue to show grit on the competition floor and have continued to fight until the last routine," Saleem said. "We are doing a nice job of staying present and together as a group, and it's exciting to know that these young women are not shying away from any challenge."
