Snyder Turns in Career Night Thursday versus Kent State

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Things were clicking for freshman outside Cait Snyder and the Ball State women's volleyball offense in the first three sets against Kent State Thursday night in Worthen Arena.

Snyder had 11 of her career-high 14 kills in the opening three frames, and the Cardinals (6-8, 6-8 Mid-American Conference) were hitting .271 (46-11-129) as a team.

Unfortunately, the Golden Flashes (10-4, 10-4 MAC) were able to pick up their defensive play over the final two sets and survive two match points in the fifth to pull out a 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14, 17-15) victory.

It was a rough ending for the Cardinals who were looking to snap a now five-match losing streak in Worthen Arena. BSU was only able to tally 10 kills over the final two sets and hit .000 (10-10-62).

Kent State on the other hand, also started connecting on offense with 28 kills and a .258 (28-11-66) rate of success in the final two frames.

In addition to her career-high 14 kills, Snyder hit .205 (14-5-44) and tallied four digs. Senior outside Kia Holder led the Ball State offense with 19 kills and added three digs and three total blocks.

Sophomore middle Marie Plitt also had a solid night, smashing nine kills and hitting .242 (9-1-33), while leading all players with six total blocks.

Redshirt sophomore setter Esther Grussing earned her second double-double of the year with 44 assists and 10 digs, while guiding the offense to a .183 (56-21-191) rate of success for the match.

Sophomore libero Maggie Huber tied for match-high honors with 25 digs, while adding one of BSU's three service aces.

Savannah Matthews led the Kent State attack with 21 kills, while three other players also ended the night in double figures. KSU libero Bryn Roberts tied Huber for the match lead in digs.

Ball State will look for a fresh start at home Friday, when it battles Kent State at 2 p.m. in the Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center. It will be the first women's volleyball match played on the site of the former Irving Gymnasium since the 1991 season.
