Women’s Basketball Falls To Akron In Overtime; 89-84
February 06, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Cardinals like taking it down to the wire and tonight's contest was no different. The only difference was the outcome of the game.
Unfortunately, for Ball State (9-6, 7-4 MAC) the win column went Akron's way (5-10, 2-10 MAC) as the Zips won in overtime, 89-84, Saturday evening in Worthen Arena.
Brady Sallee said after the game that Akron played harder along with having more energy than we did. He explained that defensively is where the Zips won the ball game.
The Cardinals led in both the first and second quarters over the Zips. At one point it seemed as if it was going to be a relatively easy ball game for Ball State.
BSU had built a 14- point (41-27) cushion with just 4:20 remaining in the first half. After that, Akron was able to make a slight comeback to come within eight points (45-37) of Ball State at intermission.
Akron came out guns a blazing in the third quarter outscoring Ball State 21-12 to take a 58-57 edge over the Cardinals heading into the final stanza.
It was an up and down affair in the fourth quarter, Akron thought they had it won as the Zips led by two (72-70) with just over a minute remaining. Akron then marched down the court to try and seal their fate but redshirt sophomore Anna Clephane came in clutch with a steal, going coast to coast, for a fast break layup to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Akron took advantage early on and although the Cardinals got some nice looks at the basket, they couldn't get them to fall.
BSU had to play catchup the remainder of OT and would eventually lose the ball game.
Sallee closed out the press conference by saying that the Cardinals' better turnaround, answer the bell and have the right taste in their mouths' for an even better NIU team Monday.
