February 18, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team could not stop one of the Mid-American Conference's hottest offenses Thursday night in Worthen Arena, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-20) to visiting Northern Illinois.
The Huskies (3-6, 3-6 MAC) entered the contest hitting .242 over its last two matches, which would place among the league leaders. While the Cardinals (5-4, 5-4 MAC) were able to slow them down late in the match, NIU finished the night hitting .209 (40-16-115) to secure the victory.
On BSU's side of the net, the Cardinals started out hot as well, hitting .256 (14-4-39) in the opening set. Unfortunately, Ball State was unable to keep up the pace and ended the night connecting at a .131 (36-20-122) clip.
Ball State was able to effectively spread the ball around, however, as eight different Cardinals recorded at least one kill, with four tying for team-high honors with six each.
Two of BSU's top attackers were senior middle Marie Plitt (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) and freshman middle Lauren Gilliland (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater). Plitt finished the match hitting .500 (6-0-12), while Gilliland connected for a .312 (6-1-16) rate of success. Gilliland also tied for match-high honors with five total blocks, while Plitt scored two.
Freshman outside hitter Cait Snyder (Hamilton, Ind./Angola) added a career-high six kills, while senior outside hitter Kia Holder (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) was the fourth Cardinal with six.
In the backcourt, sophomore libero Maggie Huber (Loveland, Ohio/St. Ursuline Academy) returned to the lineup and secured a team-high 11 digs, while logging a perfect reception percentage in 15 attempts.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to shake off tonight's loss with a 2 p.m. matinee rematch versus the Huskies Friday in Worthen Arena.
