WVB Falls To BGSU in Thursday's Battle of MAC Leaders
February 11, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Sometimes, things do not go your way. Thursday was one of those nights for the Ball State women's volleyball team which suffered a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-20) setback to Mid-American Conference leading Bowling Green at Worthen Arena.
Playing without its top defender due to injury, the Cardinals (5-2, 5-2 MAC) had a tough time stopping a talented Falcons (7-0, 7-0 MAC) attack which connected for a .279 (45-14-111) rate of success, the best for a Ball State opponent so far this season.
"Tonight's performance did not go great," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said after the match. "I know we are way more capable than that. Nevertheless, I am excited to be back with the group and to get to start battling again. Tonight left a lot of room on the table for us."
Conversely, the Ball State offense had a tough time scoring against the Falcons who entered the night second in the league behind the Cardinals in opponent attack percentage. BGSU held the Cardinals to a season-low .068 (30-22-117) hitting mark.
Despite the rough night, there were some bright spots for the Cardinals, who were led by eight kills from sophomore opposite Allison Hamaker (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East).
Sophomore middle Marie Plitt (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) added six kills and led the Ball State block with five block assists, while freshman setter Kate Vinson (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) fell just shy of her third consecutive double-double with 19 assists and nine digs.
Sophomore defensive specialist Chloe Rickenbach (Avon, Ind./Avon) led the Cardinals with 10 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Natalie Risi (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Preparatory) connected for five kills and secured eight digs.
"I am really anxious to see how our team responds tomorrow," Phillips said. "There's not one person that can feel good about what we looked like tonight. The fact we get to turn around and have another opportunity to battle Bowling Green again is a bit of a blessing. It was a gut check; and we have the ability to see how we're going to respond and how we're going to come back and prove that's not who we are."
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to rebound tomorrow, with a 5 p.m. first serve against the same Falcons squad at Worthen Arena.
Once again, due to Delaware County Health Department regulations, general attendance is not permitted at Ball State home athletics events. However, fans can still watch tomorrow's match on ESPN+ courtesy of Ball State Sports Link. Fans can also listen to the match on BallStateSports.com courtesy of SL Digital Radio.
