Gymnastics Wows Fans During Red & White Meet
December 13, 2021 | Gymnastics
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State gymnastics team left fans wanting more Monday night at Worthen Arena, closing a strong Red and White meet with several spectacular performances.
Â
"It was fun watching the team come together and compete tonight," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "Our floor and bars routines really carried us and were exciting to see. With the team heading into finals week and preparing for winter break, they did a nice job focusing on their routines and putting together some brilliant performances."
Â
In a little bit of a non-traditional scoring setup, with three athletes scoring for their respective Red or White squads in each event, it was Team Red which earned the 116.675 to 115.400 victory.
Â
However, it was Team White's performance on floor which stole the show with Megan Teter, Taylor Waldo and Grace Evans combining for a meet-high event score of 29.525. Teter led the way with the highest individual mark of the night at 9.875.
Â
Overall, senior Sandra Elsadek took home the all-around title with a combined score of 38.750 over the four events. It was an impressive fall performance paced by a pair of 9.700s on vault and floor.
Â
"It was fun to see Sandra do all four events," Saleem said. "She's worked extremely hard to be ready for the season after spending all summer changing skills. To see her come out here and grow as senior, adding more difficulty to her routines, is really fun."
Â
The meet started with Team Red taking top honors on vault, led by a mark of 9.775 from sophomore Suki Pfister.
Â
Classmate, and fellow Team Red member, Hannah Ruthberg followed with a dominating effort on bars, earning top billing with a 9.850. Her routine helped the Team Red take the second event by 0.025 and topped all competitors by at least 0.100.
Â
On beam, freshman Grace Sumner led 11 Cardinals in her first competition for Ball State with a score of 9.800. The effort helped Team Red win its third consecutive event.
Â
"It's fun to watch Grace Sumner go out and compete," Saleem added. "She's such a fun young woman, and an Indiana native who dreamed of competing for Ball State. She grew up watching us, and to see her out here performance and doing well is really exciting."
Â
The Ball State gymnastics team officially opens the 2022 season on Sunday, Jan. 7, at Missouri. The Cardinals and host Tigers will also battle Illinois State and SEMO starting at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT.
