Senior running back up for award honoring nation’s top player
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State running back Caleb Huntley was named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the most outstanding player in college football.
Â
A senior from Atlanta, Georgia, Huntley enters his senior season ninth in school history with 2,465 career rushing yards. He was named last week to the watch list for nation's top running back honor, the Doak Walker Award.
Â
Huntley ranked third in the MAC last year with 106.2 rushing yards per game, topping the 100-yard mark in seven of eight conference games. He totaled 1,275 yards on the ground and led the Cardinals' MAC-best offense with 12 touchdowns.
Â
Huntley is one of five MAC players on the Maxwell watch list, joining Kent State quarterback Dustin Crum, Toledo running back Bryant Koback, Buffalo running back Jaret Patterson and Central Michigan receiver Kalil Pimpleton.
Â
Now in its 84th year, the Maxwell Award is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official. Last year's recipient was LSU quarterback Joe Burrow.
Â
The Maxwell Football Club will announce the semifinalists for this year's award Nov. 3, and three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 23. The winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 10.
Â
Ball State returns 16 total starters this fall from a 2019 team that contended late into the season for a MAC West Division title and won key rivalry games over Northern Illinois and league champion Miami. Click here for information on football tickets for the upcoming season.
