Head Coach Mike Neu Inks Extension Through 2022 Season
June 25, 2020 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. –Ball State Director of Athletics Beth Goetz has announced that football head coach Mike Neu has signed an extension with the Cardinals through the 2022 season.
Neu has the Ball State program on the rise. The 2019 squad took down perennial Mid-American Conference favorite Northern Illinois to claim the Bronze Stalk Trophy with a come-from-behind 27-20 victory. BSU then wrapped up the season with a 41-27 win over eventual league champion Miami (Ohio) to earn the Red Bird Rivalry Trophy.
Ball State's offense was statistically the most explosive in the conference last fall. The Cardinals led the MAC in scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463 yards per game). On defense, BSU forced turnover after turnover all year. The 24 forced turnovers were the most in the conference and ranked 15th nationally.
Ten Cardinals came away with All-MAC accolades following the 2019 season, the most for a Ball State team since 2013. Over Neu's four seasons as head coach, 23 players have been recognized on an all-league team. The football team also placed a league-high 20 players on the Academic All-MAC list last fall. Fifteen of those 20 Cardinals were making a return appearance to that list.
Neu, a former Ball State quarterback and 1993 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, returned to Muncie as head coach in 2016 after spending two years as the quarterbacks coach for the NFL's New Orleans Saints.
Ball State is scheduled to open the 2020 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 with a home game against Maine. Click here for information on football tickets for the upcoming season.
