A School Record On Senior Day
March 08, 2020 | Gymnastics
For the third time in four weeks, the Ball State gymnastics team has set a school record. The Cardinals totaled a 195.850 team score, honored their seniors and finished their home finale strong in a meet win over North Carolina.
Ball State had scored a school-record team mark of 195.800 last week at Northern Illinois and got a consistent effort from everyone to beat that against UNC on Sunday. The Cardinals posted their best beam score of the year (48.800) and were close to season highs in all events.
For seniors Maddie MacDonald, Bri Slonim and Rachel Benoit, it was their last competition in Muncie. Slonim had her best vault score of the season (9.875) and Benoit tied her season bests with 9.800 marks on both beam and floor.Â
"I'm so proud of our seniors," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "To come out here and perform well and maintain composure the way they did, I couldn't be more proud of how they handled that. They showed great leadership to our underclassmen that will build a legacy because now the younger gymnasts know how to handle it."

Slonim and Marissa Nychyk were the top scorers on vault at 9.875 as four Cardinals scored 9.800 or better. Nychyk then led the team on bars with a 9.800 routine and Ball State outscored UNC on bars. Three Cardinals were 9.800 on beam (Arden Hudson, Taylor Waldo and Benoit) and then four registered 9.800 or better on floor. Claudia Goyco finished the scoring with another 9.900 floor routine, her fifth of the season.
Ball State outscored UNC on the day 195.850 - 195.375.
"When we come out and have a solid performance and have success as a team, that's what we want at the end of the year. We've been working really hard in the gym and when you come out here and trust each other, the results take care of themselves," Saleem said.
Saleem continued: "But we're not done yet. We have a lot left to do this season."
The Cardinals have a double weekend next week before the MAC Championships on March 21. BSU will compete at Michigan on Friday the 13th before going to Central Michigan on Sunday.
