RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cardinals ended their spring break trip to California on a high note with a 4-3 win over UC Riverside Thursday evening at the SRC Tennis Courts. Ball State went 2-0 on its trip out west after defeating UC San Diego on Wednesday by a score of 6-1. With the win, the Cardinals have improved to 10-2 on the season while the Highlanders fall to 3-7 overall.
Ball State opened today's matchup by taking the doubles point from UC Riverside. At first the doubles competition didn't start off great for the Cardinals, as UC Riverside would take the first match on court one, 6-1. The Cardinals quickly rallied back as the No. 2 freshmen duo of Amy Kaplan and Emily Desai earned a 6-2 defeat over Mahli Silpachai and Hanh Pham. Rebecca Herrington and Jessica Braun clinched doubles play for Ball State after earning a 6-4 decision at the No. 3 position.
Desai continues to dominate for the Cardinals in singles action at the No. 6 slot, she was the first competition off the court, winning in straight sets to move BSU's lead to 2-0. UC Riverside then took the next two matches from the Cardinals to even the score, 2-2.
After that, Kaplan beat Natalie Shamma 6-3, 7-5 on court three to give BSU back the lead. The Highlanders tied the match for the second time after taking the victory from the Cardinals at the No. 5 spot.
The match would come down to No. 4 singles, as Herrington and Lindsey Gelinas were competing for their respective teams in a three-set thriller. Herrington had won the first frame 6-4 but Gelinas came back in the second to take set two, 7-5. Herrington earned the fourth point for BSU after taking the third frame by a 6-3 decision to seal the win for the Cardinals.
The Ball State women's tennis team will return to the state of Indiana next week, as the Cardinals travel down interstate 69-south to play at Butler. The match is set to begin Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Indianapolis.
