Gym Cards Jump Past Kent State
February 23, 2020 | Gymnastics
MUNCIE - Ball State gymnastics has made its way in recent seasons with strong scores on vault. And starting that event in home meets gives the team great momentum heading into the other rotations. But what happens when the big vault isn't there?
Ball State's 48.575 team score on vault tied its lowest mark of the year, but the Cardinals made up for it with a bars rotation among the season's best.
"We started maybe a little touch flatter on vault than we've been in the past," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "It wasn't a bad routine, but we were just a little flat. Then to come over and step up on bars and finish strong was great. We stayed together as a group and it was truly a complete team performance."
Four Cards (Marissa Nychyk, Arden Hudson, Maddie MacDonald and Megan Teter) scored 9.750 or better on bars and Ball State hung tough to outscore Kent State at the end of the meet 194.575Â -Â 194.450. The meet would be won on beam and floor, where the Cardinals were + 0.375 on Kent State.

Ball State totaled 49.075 on floor, led once again by Claudia Goyco's crowd-pleasing routine. Alivia Ostendorf added a career-best 9.850 effort on floor as the two gymnasts went 1-2 in the event. Taylor Waldo was the meet's top performer on beam with a 9.800. The Cardinals had three of the day's top four scores on beam.
Nychyk's all-around score of 39.025 was the best of the day and set a new career high. It was the first time she's broken 39 all-around since she's been at Ball State.
The Cardinals will compete at Northern Illinois next Sunday, March 1 and the final home meet for the season is set for March 8 at 1 p.m.
