Great Energy In Worthen As Gym Cards Win Again
January 26, 2020 | Gymnastics
MUNCIE - Hosting three other teams in front of an energetic crowd in Worthen Arena, the Ball State gymnastics team continued its winning ways by placing first in the team's home opener on Sunday afternoon. Ball State scored 194.200 on the day and had the top two scorers on vault and floor.
"It was nice to compete at home in front a great crowd. We had great fan support and that made it exciting and fun," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "It helps us maintain our energy through all of the events. We had an awesome start on vault and we finished really strong on floor. Those are the two events where it's fun to pull in the crowd."

Marissa Nychyk delivered a 9.900 on vault and Claudia Goyco hit the same number on floor as the Cardinals turned in their best effort of the season. Seven different Cards had a routine of 9.750 or better. Ball State owned five of the top nine vault marks and five of the top scores on floor. Saleem says the Cards can be sharper on bars and beam.
"We didn't do exactly what we want on bars and beam as a group, but there were some individuals who were solid and exciting to watch," she said. "Our big thing is to stay present and let mistakes go. I think we did that really well, and we're excited about it."
Bowling Green's Alexandra Fochler was the top bars performer and SEMO's Anna Kaziska scored a meet-best 9.875 on beam.
The three wins lifted the Cardinals' meet record to 5-1 on the young season.
"Obviously, it's exciting to have wins - that's the goal," Saleem said. "At the end of the day, our focus remains on coming out and doing our gymnastics and staying together as a group. All of the other stuff will figure itself out. We started strong and finished strong, and that's why we came out with a win. But we need to stay focused on the process."
The Cards will be back on the road next Sunday at Denver, which is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
