Byrdsong Named MAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
January 14, 2020 | Track & Field
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - After turning in a blazing fast time of 7.58 in the semifinals of the 60m last Friday at the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invite, Ball State indoor track & field senior sprinter Bryeana Byrdsong has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
"Byrd had a solid January opener at Purdue, but that is only a small glimpse into her potential for the rest of the indoor season," head coach Brian Etelman said. "We're happy for her recognition and looking forward to the MAC Indoor Championship at the end of February."
Byrdsong's 60m time of 7.58 in Friday's semifinal race is the second-fastest in the league so far this season and earned her an automatic berth into the event at next month's MAC Indoor Championship.
The first Ball State student-athlete to post a MAC automatic qualifying mark this season, Byrdsong claimed MAC Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in her career, with the first coming last outdoor season.
In addition, the time earned her a spot in last Saturday's championship race of the 60m at the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invite, in which she finished fifth with a finals time of 7.69.
Overall, Byrdsong's time tied as the fifth-fastest of her career and was just .05 off her career-best effort of 7.53 set at last season's Meyo Invitational (Feb. 2, 2019).
Byrdsong and the rest of the Ball State indoor track & field team return to action Friday, Jan. 24 at the two-day Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana.
