January 13, 2020 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State football head coach Mike Neu announced the hiring of Josh Zidenberg as a defensive assistant coach on Monday. Zidenberg will serve as the passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach.
Zidenberg has a connection to Ball State defensive coordinator Tyler Stockton. The two coaches worked together at Western Illinois in 2018. That year, Stockton was WIU's defensive coordinator and Zidenberg was the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator. Western Illinois' defensive unit was among the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national leaders in total defense (23rd – 327.9 yards per game), passing yards allowed (28th – 192.6) and interceptions (30th – 12).
This past fall, Zidenberg served as the special teams coordinator and safeties coach at William & Mary. The Tribe ranked sixth nationally among FCS teams in blocked kicks (6) and 10th in kickoff returns (23.7 yards per return). William & Mary led its league in kickoff returns for touchdowns (2) and kickoff touchbacks (22).
Zidenberg began his coaching career as a player personnel assistant with the Miami Dolphins in 2008. He moved into the collegiate ranks as a graduate assistant at Virginia (2009-11) and Connecticut (2014). Zidenberg worked with the defense and special teams at Virginia while helping with the linebackers at UConn.
Other stops for Zidenberg include VMI as co-special teams coordinator/safeties coach (2015-16) and Lafayette College as running backs coach (2017).
Zidenberg earned three varsity letters as a running back and playing on special teams at Virginia from 2004-07. He won the team's George Welsh Award in 2006 (most outstanding special teams player) and John Polzer Award in 2007 (ability, sportsmanship and character).
Zidenberg graduated from Virginia in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in English. He went on to earn a master's in administration and supervision from Virginia in 2011.
