Schweikert's Vault Highlights Strong Gymnastics Opener
January 11, 2020 | Gymnastics
IOWA CITY - The Ball State gymnastics team opened its 2020 season with a solid performance in Big Ten country on Saturday, placing second in a tri-meet at Iowa. BSU's team score placed behind host Iowa and was enough to outscore Air Force.
"We had some really strong performances and we stayed together through some adversity," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "We did some things today that we can build on from here."
On the scoreboard, Stefanie Schweikert's vault, Arden Hudson's beam and Claudia Goyco's floor routine led the Cardinals. Schweikert, second team All-MAC on vault last year, was the meet's top scorer in that event with a 9.825 mark. No other gymnast reached 9.800. Hudson scored 9.800 on vault to tie for second in the meet and Goyco's 9.825 mark on the floor tied for fifth in the meet.
"We had an amazing vault rotation," Saleem said. "Stef and Bri stuck their vaults. And for Bri to come out as a senior made it a special day for us."

Making her college debut, freshman Alivia Ostendorf impressed with a 38.550 all-around score. Her best score was a 9.700 on vault. Grace Evans, another freshman, scored 9.700 on bars, the third-best score on the team. Nychyk's all-around score was 38.500.
"Liv was really solid to come out as an all-arounder as a freshman and Marissa was good all-around," Saleem said.
Ball State's 48.775 team score on vault was the best of the day.
Saturday was Iowa's pink meet to fight against cancer, and gymnasts from all three teams wore blue ribbons in remembrance of Southern Connecticut State's Melanie Coleman.
Ball State will compete at Pittsburgh Sunday, Jan. 19. The following Sunday will be Ball State's home opener.
