Stingy Defense Guides Ball State to 1-0 Win at Omaha
September 06, 2019 | Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. – Nicky Potts found the back of the net with just seconds remaining in the first half, and the Ball State University soccer team had a solid performance defensively as it defeated Omaha, 1-0, in its first road contest of the season Friday night.
The Cardinals moved to 5-0-0 on the year and extended their unbeaten streak to 16 matches. Omaha dropped to 1-3-1 for the season.
"Any time you go on the road and get a win is great," said head coach Josh Rife. "Another shutout is great as well. Defense travels, and to know we've been pretty tough defensively makes you feel a little more confident as we head on another tough trip next weekend. I'm proud of the girls and the entire staff for the work they continue to put in every day."
Ball State outshot the Mavericks 14-9 on the night, including six shots on goal to Omaha's four. Tristin Stuteville saved all four shots she faced. Her diving stop in the final moments of the game kept her perfect on the year and clinched her fourth clean sheet of the season. The Cardinal attack produced three corner kicks while the defense conceded just two.
After a steady attack in the first half, Grace Alsop took possession of the ball near midfield in the 45th minute. She sent it into the box to Potts who passed it to freshman Sam Musick. Musick fed it back to Potts who beat the keeper far post for the match's only score. The Cardinal defense controlled the remainder of the time and secured the victory.
"It was a great goal by Nicky," Rife added. "She's been working hard in training and waiting for her moment and she made the most of it today."
BSU's road trip extends into next week when the Cardinals travel to Florida to take on both Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast. Those matches are slated for Friday and Sunday.
