MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State Athletics fans who thought Labor Day Weekend could not get any more exciting are in for a big surprise as the women's volleyball program opens its 2019 campaign at home with the Ball State Tournament on Aug. 30.
One day prior to the Ruoff Kickoff Classic, which pits the Ball State football team versus Big Ten foe Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium, the women's volleyball program welcomes both UAB and USF to Worthen Arena for matches beginning at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
Those are the first two of 13 matches the Cardinals will play in "The Nest" this season, and its first of two home tournaments. BSU will also host Austin Peay, Wright State and Missouri State in the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge (Sept. 20-21) leading up to the start of Mid-American Conference play.
Fans looking for some close road trips are also in luck this season, as the Cardinals travel to Purdue Fort Wayne for an Aug. 24 exhibition match and visit Big Ten rival Purdue on Sept. 3.
The team then travels to tournaments hosted by Gonzaga (Sept. 6-7) and Northern Kentucky (Sept. 13-14), before closing non-conference play with the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge.
Ball State opens its 16-game Mid-American Conference slate with road matches at Toledo (Sept. 26) and Akron (Sept. 28). During league action, the Cardinals play home-and-home matches versus each of the other five MAC West Division programs, while facing each of the six MAC East Division squads once, with three matches at home and three on the road.
The 2019 MAC Volleyball Championship runs Nov. 21-24 at defending MAC regular season co-champion Bowling Green. The winner of the eight-team MAC Tournament earns the league's automatic berth into the 39th Annual NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship which begins Thursday, Dec. 5 at campus sites.
