Byrdsong leads three BSU qualifiers into 200 meter final

MUNCIE, Ind. --Â Ball State scored in the 10,000 meters and javelin while qualifying three sprinters into the 200 meter final Thursday as the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships opened at University Track at the Briner Sports Complex.

The Cardinals posted their best marks in at least two decades in both the 200 and javelin.
Â
Maritza Rodriguez led the Cardinals with three points in the final women's event of the day, finishing sixth in the 10K with a time of 36:37.01.

Abby Denham put Ball State on the scoreboard earlier in the day, placing seventh in the javelin for two points. Her throw of 42.38m was the second-best in program history, the best since Kim Woodhouse in 1982 and the best with the modern javelin.

Bryeana Byrdsong recorded the best time among the 200 meter heats, leading the trio of Cardinal qualifiers with a PR of 23.74. Her time also rates second-best in program history and is the fastest since BSU national champion LaTasha Jenkins in 1999.

Jasmine Harris (24.30) and Ivy McKee (24.38) also qualified for the final, which will be contested Saturday afternoon on day three of the championships. McKee's time was also a PR.

The Cardinals continue competition in the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday, with action in seven more events. The action begins at 10 a.m. The Cardinals' first event is the shot put at 3:30 p.m.
