BSU Gymnasts Ready To Take The Floor On Sunday

Ball State's gymnastics practice room is one of the best in the nation. It's large and spacious, filled with five beams, a trampoline, two vaults and everything to give the Cardinals an edge. But after a while, the team becomes eager to take the competition floor in Worthen Arena.

"We spend 13 weeks in there and we try to simulate competition scenarios but until you actually get on the floor in front of fans, there's only way to do that - and that's to get out on the floor," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "This is a great way to get ready before our first competition in January."

Fans will see newly-sharpened routines from returning gymnasts as well as what a talented group of freshmen will bring to the team.

"We expect to see some really solid gymnastics on Sunday," Saleem said. "Compared to past years, our team is more competition-ready right now. We will have new faces in the lineups and a more consistent performance-ready team. We have a solid group of women and they've worked really hard to get ready and I'm very excited to see them out there."

The Cardinals' annual Red-White meet caps off the fall semester and serves as the beginning to another competition season. The roster is evenly split with nine Cards on each side, and Ball State celebrity judges will determine the winners. Sunday's celebrity judges are:

Deputy Athletics Director and gymnastics administrator Haven Fields
Academic Coordinator Alyssa Gary
Assistant Professor of Chemistry Mary Konkle
Associate Professor of Spanish Dr. Stephen Hessel
and, of course, Charlie Cardinal.

Ball State's season opener will be Saturday, Jan. 11 at Iowa. The home opener is a quad meet in Worthen on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.
