BSU running back has more than 300 yards rushing the last two weeks
ROCHESTER, Minn. – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), in association with The Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl Organization, have selected Ball State running back Caleb Huntley as a nominee for the 2019 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Huntley saw his 2018 season cut short due to an Achilles injury after just six games. The Atlanta, Georgia, native had been coming off a strong 2017 campaign in which he rushed for 1,003 yards and was named Ball State's John Hodge Award winner as the team's outstanding freshman.
After a grueling off-season rehabilitation, Huntley opened 2019 with 81 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries versus Indiana. His breakout performance came two weeks ago when he put up 157 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 35 carries in a 27-20 win versus Northern Illinois. He followed that performance by rushing for 152 yards on 29 carries in last week's 29-23 win at Eastern Michigan. On the season, he leads the team with five touchdowns and 592 yards rushing, which is good for fifth in the Mid-American Conference.
Ten times during the 2019 college football season, three inspiring student-athletes from all levels of college football, who have overcome injury, illness or other challenges, will be recognized as Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Nominees by a panel of writers, editors and sports information directors from CoSIDA, AP and Touchdown Illustrated.
At the end of the season, three of the 30 nominees will be chosen as Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award winners and will be recognized at a special ceremony during the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Additionally, $30,000 will be donated in the names of the nine student-athletes selected as finalists to their school's general scholarship fund, with $15,000 being awarded in the names of the three winners and $15,000 on behalf of the six named honorable mention.
