Volleyball Falls to UNI in Active Ankle Challenge Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team opened play in the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge with a loss to Northern Iowa, as the Panthers (3-4) pulled away over the final two sets for a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 25-19) victory Friday morning in Worthen Arena.
UNI, which entered the event already with wins over highly-ranked Kentucky and Creighton, hit nearly .390 in both the third and fourth sets to break open a deadlocked match.
Senior outside hitter Ellie Dunn led the Cardinals (4-3) with 14 kills, while redshirt senior middle Meg Starling added 10 and hit for a team-best .500 (10-2-16) percentage. Starling also registered two solo blocks and four assists for a Ball State squad that out-blocked UNI, 8-4.
Junior setter Amber Seaman ran the Cardinals' offense to a .208 rate of success with 31 assists, while junior libero Kate Avila registered a team-high 13 digs. Avila has now collected double-digit digs in 36 consecutive matches and 65 times over her career.
Ball State fell behind by five midway through the first set but rallied to cut the deficit to 21-20 before Northern Iowa rattled off four of the next five points to win it. The Cardinals answered by jumping out to a 5-0 second-set lead and never trailing on the way to evening the match at one set apiece.
Northern Iowa came out of the intermission strong, racking up 15 kills to only three errors in the third set to regain control. Ball State, conversely had eight kills and eight errors, hitting .000 to fall behind two sets to one.
The visiting Panthers then led throughout the fourth set, building a lead as large as six points at 18-12. Ball State rallied to get within three at 19-16, but UNI staved off the run and closed out the day's opening match.
Jaydlin Seehase racked up nine kills over the final two sets for Northern Iowa. She finished with 14 for the match as one of four Panthers in double figures. Karlie Taylor led all players with 16, while UNI setter Rachel Koop registered a match-high 45 assists.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to the court later this evening with a 7:30 p.m. match versus North Dakota State.
