WBB One of Eight Teams Selected To Play At The Gulf Coast Showcase
August 30, 2018 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team is set to compete at the Gulf Coast Showcase, which announced its Thanksgiving tournament lineup today for the Nov. 23-25 weekend at the Germain Arena in Estero, Florida.
"We are excited to play in one of the most prestigious holiday tournaments the women's game has to offer," Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee said. "The tournament field speaks for itself, and I look forward to our players experiencing such a first class event."
The Cardinals are set compete in three games in three days in an eight-team bracket that features Fordham, Duke, Washington, Texas, Quinnipiac, Missouri and Michigan. Seven of the teams won 22+ games last season, while Duke and Quinnipiac advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Ball State will face Fordham for the first time in program history in the opening round at 11 a.m. on Nov. 23. The Cardinals will then play the winner between Washington and Duke on Saturday, Nov. 24.
The Cardinals last met the Blue Devils in Durham, North Carolina in 2005. If Ball State were to face Washington it will be the first meeting between the two programs.
Sunday's competition could have the Cardinals playing Texas, Quinnipiac, Missouri or Michigan. If Ball State gets the opportunity to play Missouri, the Tigers will see a familiar face on the Cardinals bench as Ball State recently hired former Mizzou standout Bri Kulas as its new assistant coach.
The Gulf Coast Showcase began in 2013 and features past champions including Middle Tennessee, UConn, Stanford, Baylor and most recently nation champion Notre Dame.
For the fourth consecutive year, the tournament will support the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. The hospital is the only children's hospital's between Tampa and Miami and provides vital health care for the region's sick and injured children and their families. The hospital new $242 million facility provides 300,000 square feet of space, 128 pediatric and NICU beds with space to expand to 160 beds, a 17-bay emergency department, a freestanding pediatric pharmacy and an in-hospital school classroom.
