Evan Marquardt Honored as MAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
May 14, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State junior Evan Marquardt was named the Mid-American Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week thanks to his quality start against Toledo on Sunday. He is the third Ball State pitcher to earn the award this spring.
Marquardt equaled career highs in innings pitched (7.0) and strikeouts (9) to help the Cardinals clinch a spot in the MAC Tournament in Sunday's 9-1 victory. The righty from Midland, Michigan, retired 15 of the final 17 Toledo batters he faced. This was Marquardt's sixth appearance in a league game, but just his second start.
Earlier in the week, Marquardt threw the first three innings against Purdue, which entered that game on a 13-game winning streak and scored 27 runs the day prior against Fort Wayne. In limited action, Marquardt struck out four batters and held Purdue to just one run.
Ohio first baseman Rudy Rott was named MAC Player of the Week.
Ball State (28-23, 15-9 MAC) concludes the regular season this week with four home games. First up is a non-conference contest against Fort Wayne on Tuesday, May 15 at 3 p.m.
