March 09, 2018 | Women's Swimming and Diving
COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ball State women's diving team rounded out the 2017-18 season with a strong showing at NCAA Zone C Diving Championships. Rachel Smallwood and Rachel Bertram were the two divers representing Ball State marking their second straight year at Zones.
Betram and Smallwood competed in a deep field of more than 50 divers that includes teams from the BigTen, SEC, ACC, and MAC, among others.
On the first day Smallwood finished 17th on the 1-meter, advancing to the finals. She posted a score of 275.95 in prelims, just off her career best, to earn 10th place. Smallwood finished the day with a cumulative score of 531.35. This performance marked the first time a Ball State diver has made it to finals at Zones since Lisa Maertin in 2010. Smallwood just missed out on an NCAA qualifying spot.
Rachel Bertram finished the first day in the 33rd spot. She posted a score of 240.40 in 1-meter.
"The ladies dove really well today and were right in the mix," diving coach Nick Gayes said after day one of action. "Rachel Smallwood had a great prelims to advance to finals which was one of her main goals for this season."
On Friday, the women competed in the 3-meter board where Bertram placed 19th and Smallwood placed 26th. Bertram posted a score of 261.00, just missing the chance to compete at finals. Smallwood finished the day with a score of 242.60.
"Rachel Bertram narrowly missed finals but did have one of the best dives of the day with her full out," Gayes added after day two of competition. "Our girls are very much in the mix with the best divers in the zone and we look forward to continuing to battle with them in the years to come."
This concludes the 2017-18 season for the Ball State women's swimming and diving team.
