John Baker Named MAC Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week
March 08, 2018 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ball State baseball sophomore pitcher John Baker was named the Mid-American Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for his outstanding performance last weekend in a win over Radford.
Baker, a native of Hartland, Michigan, set a personal high with 11 strikeouts in the 7-0 win over Radford on March 3. The righty teamed up with junior Evan Marquardt to toss Ball State's first shutout of the season. Baker has tallied at least eight strikeouts in each of his three starts. He leads the MAC and ranks 16th nationally with 29 strikeouts on the season.
This is the second time in his career Baker has earned MAC Pitcher of the Week honors. He was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week in March 2017 as well.
Toledo right-handed pitcher Sam Shutes shared the honor with Baker. Shutes also struck out 11 batters in a 7-2 win over Sacred Heart this past Sunday. Meanwhile, Western Michigan outfielder Nate Grys earned MAC Player of the Week accolades.
Due to projected inclement weather this weekend in North Carolina, the Cardinals (5-7) are now scheduled to play a doubleheader at Western Carolina tomorrow, March 9, and will try to wrap up the series with a single game on Saturday.
