Kent State Takes Game Two Against Ball State
March 24, 2018 | Baseball
KENT, Ohio – Host Kent State earned its first shutout of the season in an 11-0 win over the Ball State baseball team Saturday afternoon at Schoonover Stadium.
Kent State starting pitcher Joey Murray (2-1), the 2017 Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year and reigning MAC Pitcher of the Week, kept the Cardinals in check over 6.1 innings. The righty struck out eight batters and limited Ball State (11-11, 1-1 MAC) to six singles.
The Golden Flashes got all the runs they would need in the third inning. Catcher Tim Dalporto came through with a two-out, two-run single through the right side. Dalporto finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Ball State starting pitcher Kyle Nicolas held his own against Murray through the first five innings. The freshman limited the preseason MAC favorite to two runs and four hits in that stretch. However, Nicolas was pulled in the sixth inning after two runners reached base with one out.
Kent State (11-7, 1-1) went on to score four times in the sixth off the Ball State bullpen and then five more times in the eighth inning.
Senior Seth Freed and sophomore Noah Powell each recorded a pair of hits for the Cardinals. Senior Colin Brockhouse reached base three times via a single and two walks.
Ball State will try to earn its first series win at Kent State since 2008 in the series finale tomorrow, March 25. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
