Dominique Named MAC West Softball Player of the Week
February 27, 2018 | Softball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - For her part in helping guide the Ball State softball team to a 4-1 record at last weekend's ECU Pirate Invitational, sophomore left fielder Haley Dominique has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.
Â
"Haley had a very good weekend," head coach Megan Ciolli Bartlett said. "She came up big in several clutch situations, helping us walk away from a highly competitive tournament with a 4-1 record. She is just grinding away and doing a great job settling into the leadoff spot."
Â
Dominique led the Ball State offense with seven hits and earned a .750 slugging percentage at the ECU Pirate Invitational, collecting four singles, two doubles and a home run in 16 official at bats. She recorded at least one hit in four of the five games, while drawing four walks in her lone hitless contest.
Â
Her biggest hit of the tournament came in Friday's 4-1 come-from-behind win over host ECU (Feb. 23), when she blasted the first pitch of the seventh inning out of the park and over the safety netting to spark a four-run rally for the Cardinals. It was her first home run of the season and only the second of her career.
Â
She followed by going 3-for-4 in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Saint Francis (Feb. 24). Then, with ECU's pitchers still having visions of her blast from the previous night, Dominique was walked four times in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Pirates (Feb. 24).
Â
She closed the tournament by going 2-for-4 versus Canisius (Feb. 25), including a two-run double in Ball State's eight-run fourth inning which propelled the team to an 11-4 win. Dominique opened the three-day event with a hit and walk in the 2-0 shutout win over the Golden Griffins (Feb. 23).
Â
Three weeks into the season, Dominique leads the Ball State offense with 15 hits and a .395 batting average. Her .500 on base percentage is second among the team's starters, while her .579 slugging percentage is third.
Â
Dominique and the rest of the Ball State softball team open play on their 10-day, 12-game spring break trip Friday at the Citrus Classic II which will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida. First up for the Cardinals at the three-day event will be games versus Fordham (Noon) and Robert Morris (2:30 p.m.).
