Miles Named MAC West Softball Pitcher of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - - For her role in Ball State softball's 3-2 win at New Mexico State last Saturday (Feb. 17), junior starting pitcher Aeshia Miles has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week.

"Aeshia threw at an elite level Saturday," pitching coach Josh Johnson said. "She controlled New Mexico State's hitters, and even though she gave up some hits, she managed them well. The Aggies are a very good team, receiving votes in both national polls entering the game, and Aeshia did what she wanted against them. She had a great game."

Miles earned her first complete game win of the season by limiting the Aggies, who received votes in both the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll entering last week, to two runs and seven hits while striking out five.

She also issued just one walk to a New Mexico State squad which was batting .375 as a team, and averaging 11 hits, eight runs and three walks per game entering the contest. All three of NM State's previous games were against then-No. 13 Kentucky.

Over three starts and 19.0 innings of work this season, Miles has a 2-1 record and a 2.21 ERA. She has stuck out a team-high 13 batters, while issuing just three walks. Her 1.11 walks allowed per seven innings is currently second in the MAC and 83rd nationally.

Miles and the rest of the Ball State softball team return to action Friday when they open play in the ECU Pirate Invitational with games versus Canisius (12:30 p.m.) and tournament host East Carolina (3 p.m.).
