CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ball State baseball newcomer William Baker was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for his solid hitting performance this past weekend at the season opening Shipyard Classic in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
Baker led the team in batting average (.625) while recording multiple hits in three of the four games. In the opener against UMass Lowell on Feb. 16, the junior outfielder went 4-for-5 with a double and run scored in the 8-5 victory. The following day, Baker tallied a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning against UMass Lowell to even the game at 3-all. Ball State went on to win the game in the bottom of the 10th inning, 4-3.
The native of Kansas City, Missouri, played his first two years of collegiate baseball at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kansas. He joined the Ball State squad this past fall and started all four games this weekend at right field.
Two right-handed pitchers shared the MAC Pitcher of the Week award – Central Michigan's Michael Brettell and Miami's Nick Ernst.
The Cardinals (2-2) will be back in action next weekend in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic hosted by New Orleans. Ball State will face the host Privateers, Iowa and Virginia Tech.
