Gymnasts Shine At Red & White Meet
December 03, 2018 | Gymnastics
MUNCIE - A Ball State gymnastics squad featuring eight freshmen was unveiled Monday night at Worthen Arena, as the Cardinals hosted their annual Red & White intrasquad event. After long hours in the gym each day, the meet season has finally arrived for head coach Joanna Saleem's sixth BSU season.
"It was fun and exciting to get back on the competition floor," Saleem said. "I thought we did really well today. You never know when you have that many new routines and what's it's going to look like in front of the fans and all of the nerves. We've been talking about that a lot and they responded really well to that. I'm pretty pleased with how we did today."
The Cardinals divided teams evenly and the team wearing Red - led by Sydney Finke, Sandra Elsadek and Marissa Nychyk - won the team scoring 7-5. Maria Ramsey scored two points for the White team.
2019 GYMNASTICS SCHEDULE
Saleem mentioned that the team faced some jitters early, considering so many athletes were competing in the spacious arena at the college level for the first time.
"We have a young team and with so many freshmen competing for lineup spots it was a great time to get out there and compete."
After the holiday break, the Cardinals will compete twice on the east coast to open the season. The regular season opener will be Sunday, Jan. 13 at George Washington. The second meet of the season is Saturday, Jan. 19 at North Carolina. BSU's home opener is Sunday, Feb. 3 against Western Michigan.
