October 29, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - For the second time this month, the Ball State women's volleyball program turned a dominating weekend on the court into a clean sweep of the Mid-American Conference weekly awards as the Cardinals claimed MAC West Division Offensive, Defensive and Setter of the Week honors.
Â
Not surprisingly, it's the same trio of Cardinals who pulled off the feat last time that swept the awards this week. Junior Amber Seaman earned her fifth setter of the week honor this season, while senior outside Ellie Dunn claimed her third offensive player of the week award in 2018 and junior libero Kate Avila picked up her second defensive player of the week nod of the year.Â
Â
Together, the trio anchored a Ball State squad which tallied sweeps of Northern Illinois (Oct. 26) and Western Michigan (Oct. 27) last weekend to improve to 19-6 (10-2 MAC) on the year.
Â
Seaman averaged 11.17 assists per set and ran the offense at a combined .237 clip last weekend. In Friday's sweep of the Huskies, Seaman dished out 37 assists and guided the offense to a .374 attack percentage, which tied as the team's third-best hitting mark of the season. She also served up a pair of aces and tallied two block assists.
Â
Saturday's sweep of the Broncos was a milestone night for Seaman, who became just the sixth player in program history to reach 3,000 career assists and just the 19th player in BSU annals to serve up 100 career aces. She finished the night with 30 assists, raising her career total to 3,023, and a pair of aces, upping her career total to 101. She also collected 12 digs in the win for her fifth double-double of the season, while adding three block assists.
Â
Dunn averaged 3.83 kills per set and hit .309 (23-6-55) for the weekend. Her biggest kill came at the 23-12 mark of the opening set Friday versus NIU when she blasted her 1,000th career kill off the NIU block. With the blast, Dunn become just the 11th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills and the team's first to reach the mark since the 2009 season.Â
Â
Dunn finished the match with 14 kills and was just as impressive on defense with a solo block and 15 digs for her team-leading 11th double-double of the season. In Saturday's win over WMU, Dunn led the Ball State offense with nine kills and added seven digs and three total blocks.
Â
Avila averaged 6.00 digs-per-set and posted a .967 (29-for-30) reception percentage last weekend. In the win over the Huskies, Avila collected 14 digs and earned a perfect reception percentage in 16 attempts. She followed with 22 digs and a .929 (13-for-14) reception percentage in the sweep of the Broncos.Â
Â
Overall, her play in the backcourt helped limit Ball State's opponents to a combined .096 attack percentage for the week, with NIU hitting .119 and WMU connecting at a .077 clip.Â
Â
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to the road this weekend for matches at Central Michigan (Friday) and Eastern Michigan (Saturday). Both are scheduled for 7 p.m. first serves.
