Lots of Positives to Take Away from Baseball’s First Fall Scrimmage
October 02, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team played its first of two fall scrimmage games Sunday afternoon against Butler at First Merchants Ballpark Complex. The two squads agreed to play 12 innings with Butler edging the Cardinals by a score of 11-9.
"We had a great turnout for Scout Day," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "This was a great opportunity for a lot of players to gain experience. It was a beautiful day and a solid crowd showed up to support our team."
Sophomore righty Drey Jameson, the 2018 MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year, tossed the first two innings for Ball State. After walking the first two batters of the game, Jameson settled down and retired the ensuing five batters, which featured a double play, to keep Butler off the scoreboard. Fellow sophomore Kyle Nicolas tossed a scoreless third and fourth innings that included two strikeouts.
Lefties Garrett Simmons and Benjamin Wiegand also posted zeros on the scoreboard in their combined three innings of work.
At the plate, nine Cardinals tallied a hit. Senior Griffin Hulecki notched the team's first RBI of the fall, a two-out single to score newcomer Ryan Peltier. Sophomore Tim Blankenberger came through with a two-run double to the left-center field gap in the final inning. Meanwhile, sophomore Erek Bolton, who missed the majority of the 2018 spring season with an injury, scored three times.
"We did some things very well and other things we have to work on," Maloney said. "That is what scrimmages are all about."
The other scrimmage date for the Cardinals is Saturday, Oct. 13. Ball State will host Purdue Fort Wayne at First Merchants Ballpark Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
