Women's Tennis Wins 6-1 At Illinois State

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Ball State women's tennis team recorded its first win of the season topping Illinois State 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Bloomington Tennis Center. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-1 on the season while the Redbirds fall to 1-1.
Ball State took an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Julia Sbircea alongside teammate Peyton Gollhofer were the first doubles tandem off the court for the Cardinals after defeating Ivon Mihaleva and Jana Kustkova by a score of 6-3 on court two. It was Sarah Swiderski and Isabelle Dohanics that clinched the doubles point for the Cardinals after recording a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 position. The top court also won for Ball State, Rebecca Herrington and doubles partner Audrey Berger finished with a 7-6 defeat over Veronika Golanova and Jelena Karla Vujicic.
The Cardinals took five of the six matches from the Redbirds in singles action. Victoria Sec pushed Ball State's lead to 2-0 with her quick straight set take down over Mihaleva at position five. Herrington gave the Cardinals their third point of the day as she cruised past Vanthier 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. Dohanics clinched the win at No. 4 with her 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jana Kustkova. Gollhofer and Swiderski rounded out the wins for the Cardinals today on their respective courts.
The Cardinals' first home match will be a doubleheader on Jan. 28 against Eastern Illinois with the first match beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the second match starting at 4 p.m.
