Cheer squad finishes program-best second place
MUNCIE, Ind. – Without question, priority number one for the Ball State cheer and dance teams is to entertain fans at home events and represent the university in the community.
But these talented athletes can compete, too.
And compete they did.
The cheerleading squad recently finished a program-best second in the nation at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) & University Dance Association (UDA) College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship in Orlando, Florida. The Ball State cheerleaders competed in the Small Co-Ed Division I category. Purdue narrowly edged the Cardinals for the title in the finals after Ball State held the top spot following the preliminary round. Hours and hours of preparation led to the impressive finish.
"I am extremely proud of the hard work and commitment of our team," cheer co-head coach Wendy Richards said. "While most students were on break, they were practicing for competition. That dedication paid off with the best finish in program history. Hitting two routines is not easy and very few teams can accomplish that. This team did."
Co-head coach Brenda Jamerson added, "Our team is a relatively young team which took on the challenge of representing Ball State University at the highest collegiate cheer level. The finish and experience were beyond amazing and the result epitomized their determination, their faith in one another, trust in their coaches and pride in their university."
In the UDA hip-hip category, the Code Red dance team improved from a 14th-place finish last year to take 12th overall this winter, just missing out on finals.
"It is an unbelievable honor to compete in the toughest dance division at nationals alongside outstanding programs like UNLV, Memphis, Kentucky and LSU," Code Red head coach Amy Wilkins said. "This is such a wonderful learning experience for Code Red and I am extremely proud of their hard work. It was also an amazing feeling to be able to support our cheerleaders! We felt so proud to yell right along with them."
