Volleyball Sweeps Navy in Home Opener
September 01, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team opened the home portion of the 2017 season in dominating fashion, scoring a 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 27-25) sweep of Navy Friday morning in the opening match of the Ball State Tournament at Worthen Arena.
For the Cardinals (3-1), who scored the first six points of the match, the 25-7 opening set victory is the second-largest in the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present) in program history. The only larger set victory was a 25-5 opening set win versus Tennessee State on Sept. 3, 2010 in another match Ball State swept at home.
Ball State entered the match versus the previously undefeated Midshipmen (4-1) with the best attack percentage in the league, and built upon that early by hitting above .470 in each of the first two sets. After a hard-fought third set win, the Cardinals finished the match with a .342 (49-9-117) rate of success which is the team's best mark since hitting .357 (42-12-84) in a three-set home win over Toledo on Oct. 29, 2015.
In running the Cardinals' offense to a .342 rate of success Friday morning, sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) was credited with her third straight double-double of the season. She handed out 32 assists and collected a match-high 12 digs, to go along with three kills and a pair of service aces. Seaman leads Ball State's active roster with 16 career double-doubles.
Ball State's junior outside attacking duo of Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) and Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) combined for 30 of the team's 49 total kills, led by a season-high 18 markers from Goodsel. Dunn finished the match with 12 kills and a .360 (12-3-25) attack percentage, while Goodsel hit .326 (18-4-43).
Goodsel also turned in another solid performance in the backcourt, earning eight digs and a .905 (17-for-19) reception percentage. Dunn added a pair of block assists to her stat line.
Redshirt junior middle Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) led Ball State's attacking corps with a .471 hitting percentage, blasting eight kills on 17 swings with no errors. The eight kills are the second-highest output of Starling's career, trailing only her 10 markers in last Saturday's win over Indiana State. Meanwhile, sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ill./Illiana Christian) added five kills, a pair of blocks and an ace.
Sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) reached double digit digs for the third consecutive match, with 10, while also serving up an ace and recording a .917 (10-for-11) reception percentage. Rounding out Ball State's top backcourt players were freshman Grace Nelson (Bennington, Neb./Elkhorn) and junior Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) with eight digs apiece.
Maddi Sgattoni led the Navy attack with seven kills, while Emily Solis collected a team-best 10 digs. Overall, the Ball State defense limited the Midshipmen to a .155 (30-14-103) attack percentage, its lowest mark of the season.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action later tonight with a 7:30 p.m. first serve versus Bradley. The match will be carried live on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app.
