Etelman Adds Three To Track & Field Staff for Upcoming Season
August 23, 2017 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State track & field third-year head coach Brian Etelman has completed his staff for the upcoming 2017-18 season with the addition of Nate Brown, Anna Farello and Alexus Jimson-Miller.
An instructor and advisor in the Ball State University School of Kinesiology since August of 2015, Brown will also serve as the throws coach for the Cardinals. A collegiate thrower himself at Indiana State University (2001-05), Brown served as the volunteer assistant throws coach at Hamilton Heights High School for the past two seasons.
Brown has spent the better part of the last decade working to develop athletes in various event groups and sports at the high school, collegiate and post-collegiate levels. Prior to working at Ball State, Brown was an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport at his alma mater Indiana State. He has also worked as a fitness director, personal trainer and spent two years as the assistant boys track & field coach at Fishers High School (2009-11).
"Nate's expertise in the areas of strength and conditioning and exercise science will have a huge positive impact on our throws area," Etelman said. "I am really excited to have someone so close to the program that appreciates what we do step in and help guide us. The throws group is on the brink of being a big difference maker for our team and I believe Nate will play a large role in making that happen."
Farello joins the Ball State staff after graduating from the University of Portland this past May with a degree in psychology and Spanish. A winner of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this past spring, Farello was a four-year letterwinner in both cross country and track & field for the Pilots. In addition to working with Ball State's distance runners, she will be pursuing a masters' degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology beginning this fall.
Farello was twice voted by her teammates at Portland as the team's Most Inspirational Performer and earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention in her final cross country season. In 2016, she helped guide the Pilots to the WCC cross country championship and reach the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. She finished in 12th at the WCC Championship, 28th at the NCAA West Regionals and 124th at the NCAA Championships.
"Anna will be working with Coach DeGrio within the cross country/distance group and I am looking forward to her adding to the already great group dynamic," Etelman said. "The pair will make a great duo as we continue to work hard to become one of the MAC's most competitive distance squads. We have made so much progress in the past two years and I know this year will prove to be our best yet. We are looking forward to the role Anna will play in that journey."
Jimson-Miller joins the Ball State staff after graduating from Miami University this past May with a degree in public health. A four-year letterwinner for the RedHawks track & field program, Jimson-Miller set both the Miami and Mid-American Conference Championship record in the 100m hurdles when she won the 2017 outdoor title in 13.26. The effort helped her advance to the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the second straight season. In addition to working with Ball State's sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers, Jimson-Miller will be pursuing a masters' degree in Emerging Media Design and Development beginning this fall.
A two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete in outdoor track & field, Jimson-Miller placed second in the 100m hurdles at the 2016 MAC Outdoor Championships. She is also a two-time Academic All-MAC selection and a two-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Women's Track & Field Team member.
"Alexus will help me oversee the power event areas, and work closely with the sprints/hurdles and jumps groups," Etelman said. " She competed in the NCAA post-season twice as a hurdler and had a great experience as a student-athlete. Her passion for the sport and achieving success will make her a great coach. I'm really excited to work with Alexus as we both aim to continue to build champions in the sprint/hurdle/jump group and take an already talented group to the next level."
