#CardinalCamp17: Defense Stands Tall During Second Scrimmage
August 19, 2017 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – Preseason camp is winding down for the Ball State football team and on Saturday morning the Cardinals held their second scrimmage at Scheumann Stadium.
The coaching staff focused on communication with the players, making sure everyone was on the same page with correct personnel groupings on and off the field. The scrimmage was split into two team segments with the first segment putting the offense deep in its own territory.
"[The defense] did a good job handling that situation of being backed up much better than the offense," Ball State head coach Mike Neu said. "Overall, I think the defense, definitely during the first team segment, was much better, much sharper [than the offense.]"
During the first team segment, the defense consistently forced the offense to punt the ball. On one of the drives when the offense reached midfield, the defense responded with a fourth down stop. Later in the segment, quarterback pressure applied by linebacker Jaylin Thomas and defensive end Sean Hammonds on a third down play forced an overthrow and another hold. At the very end of practice, the defense also stopped the offense in a red zone situation.
The offense had a few bright moments as well. Big pass plays from senior quarterback Jack Milas to freshman wide out Luke Endsley and sophomore receiver Antwan Davis set up a touchdown. Junior quarterback Riley Neal tossed a perfect 13-yard touchdown pass to Riley Miller. Finally, freshman running back Kevin Dominique broke contain and scampered for a 49-yard touchdown run along the near sidelines.
